California CSLB License Requirements

California requires contractors to carry a minimum of $15,000 in general liability coverage to obtain and maintain a CSLB license. Many general contractors and project owners require higher limits — $1 million or more — before allowing work to begin on a job site.

James Widjaja can issue certificates of insurance quickly so you're never held up waiting for paperwork when a new job comes through.

Workers' Compensation Insurance for California Contractors

California has some of the strictest workers' compensation laws in the country. If you have even one employee — including part-time workers, seasonal laborers, and subcontractors who don't carry their own workers' comp policy — you are legally required to carry workers' compensation insurance. Failure to do so can result in stop-work orders, fines of up to $10,000, and personal liability for injured workers' medical costs and lost wages.

For sole proprietors with no employees, workers' comp is optional — but strongly recommended. If you're injured on a job site and don't have workers' comp, you're paying all your own medical bills and losing income with no recourse. Many GCs now require subs to show proof of workers' comp — even one-person operations — before allowing them on a job site. James Widjaja can structure a workers' comp policy that meets the requirements of the general contractors and project owners you work with.

Workers' comp premiums for contractors are calculated based on your payroll and job classification codes. High-risk trades like roofing and structural framing carry higher rates than lower-risk trades like painting or flooring. James Widjaja has deep experience with California contractor classification codes and can ensure your payroll is classified correctly — preventing surprise audits and premium adjustments at year-end.

Tools, Equipment, and Builder's Risk — Don't Overlook Inland Marine

Most general liability policies exclude tools and equipment from coverage. If your tools are stolen from your truck overnight, or your equipment is damaged on a job site, a standard GL policy won't pay to replace them. Inland marine insurance (also called tools and equipment coverage) fills this gap — covering hand tools, power tools, machinery, and leased equipment while in transit and on the job site.

If you're building or significantly renovating a structure, builder's risk insurance is equally important. It covers the building under construction against fire, theft, vandalism, wind, and other perils from groundbreaking to certificate of occupancy. Most lenders require it, and many GC contracts make it the contractor's responsibility to carry it. James Widjaja can quote standalone tools and equipment coverage or bundle it with your other policies for the best rate.

Frequently Asked Questions — Contractors Insurance California

At minimum, California contractors need general liability insurance to obtain a CSLB license. If you have any employees — including part-time and seasonal workers — workers' compensation is required by state law. Most commercial clients and GCs also require proof of commercial auto insurance if you use vehicles on the job. James Widjaja can bundle all of these coverages into one coordinated package at the best possible price.

The CSLB minimum is $15,000, but this is woefully inadequate for real-world liability exposure. Most commercial project owners and GCs require $1 million per occurrence / $2 million aggregate. Government contracts often require $2 million per occurrence. Residential clients typically require $500,000 to $1 million. James Widjaja will review the contracts you're working with and recommend limits that meet your clients' requirements and protect your personal assets.

Yes — if a subcontractor you hire doesn't carry their own workers' compensation policy, California law considers them your employee for workers' comp purposes. You could be held liable for their injuries. Always get a certificate of insurance from every subcontractor you hire, and call James Widjaja at (559) 297-5964 to make sure your policy properly addresses your subcontractor exposure.

Contractors insurance costs vary significantly based on your trade, annual revenue, number of employees, and claims history. A sole proprietor handyman might pay $800–$1,500 per year for general liability. An electrical contractor with five employees could pay $8,000–$15,000 for a full package including GL, workers' comp, and commercial auto. Roofing contractors typically pay the highest rates due to elevated risk. Call (559) 297-5964 for a quote specific to your trade and business.

Yes — your California contractors insurance policy covers you throughout the state, not just in Clovis or Fresno. Whether you're working a commercial project in Sacramento, doing residential work in Bakersfield, or traveling for specialty trade work anywhere in California, your coverage follows you. If you regularly work in other states, James Widjaja can discuss whether a multi-state endorsement is needed.
